Gabriel Medrano Gutiérrez

My family roots run deep in Mexico. My parents are both from Mexico, and that heritage — the language, the culture, the values — shaped who I am before I ever understood it. I carry Mexico with me everywhere I go.

I was raised in California, USA — one of the most diverse places on Earth, yet one where I never fully felt at home. Growing up between cultures left me feeling alienated, like I was perpetually in-between: not fully American, not fully Mexican, and searching for a place where I actually belonged.

California gave me a lot. But it never gave me that sense of place I was always looking for.

Since I was 5 years old, Canada was the place I wanted to be. I don't know exactly why — maybe it was something I saw, something I felt, some quiet pull toward something different. But the dream never left. It just got louder as I got older.

On June 5, 2026 — just one week after turning 17 — I made it. I moved to Canada at the very start of my adult life, deliberately choosing to begin this chapter somewhere new, somewhere I had always wanted to be. I'm building my life here, one day at a time, with 1,095 days standing between me and official Canadian nationality.
